ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Chinese government announced it has filed a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the European Union’s tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs).
China’s Commerce Ministry stated that the action was taken to protect the rights and interests of its growing EV industry and to support global efforts toward green transformation. The EU has recently introduced provisional tariffs of up to 37.6% on these vehicles, arguing that they benefit unfairly from Chinese government subsidies. China maintains that its support for the EV sector complies with WTO regulations.
The two sides have until early November to address their disagreements before these provisional tariffs could become permanent.
Despite this tension, China’s auto exports saw an increase in July compared to the previous year, while domestic sales experienced a decline, according to an industry report.
China’s Commerce Ministry contends that the EU’s tariffs breach WTO rules and hinder global climate change efforts. In response, China has started investigations into French cognac exports and European pork, raising concerns among analysts that this could lead to a broader trade conflict with the EU that might have negative economic repercussions.
