Legendary actor Firdous Jamal has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of Lahore, attributing much of his success and fame in the entertainment industry to the city and its residents.
Speaking at a literary debate organized by the Alhamra Arts Council, Jamal reflected on the unique charm and allure of Lahore, which he believes has not only elevated his own career but also brought recognition to many other artists. He conveyed his deep appreciation for the love and respect he has received from Lahorites, acknowledging that he feels deeply indebted to them.
Jamal described Lahore as the heart of Pakistan’s cultural scene, emphasizing its pivotal role in the flourishing of theatre, film, and drama. He lamented the current state of contemporary theatre, criticizing the prevalence of vulgarity and explicit content that he feels detracts from the art form’s original essence.
He reminisced about the past, recalling how he introduced actor Amanullah to the showbiz world and highlighted Lahore’s rich theatrical tradition. Jamal noted that he has performed theatre across Pakistan, but emphasized that Lahore’s tradition of theatre dates back 100 to 150 years and was significantly supported by institutions like Government College Lahore (now GCU).
Jamal expressed concern that the field is now dominated by repetition rather than innovation, as he feels that much of the new content lacks originality and depth. His reflections underscore his deep connection to Lahore and its significant influence on his career and the arts.
