A closing ceremony was held to mark the successful completion of the USD 3.7 million project, “Strengthening Tsunami and Earthquake Preparedness in Coastal Areas of Pakistan.” This initiative, supported by the Government of Japan and in collaboration with the Economic Affairs Division and the Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) in Sindh and Balochistan, was celebrated for its achievements in enhancing disaster preparedness.
Though the project has concluded, its impact is enduring. The communities and institutions involved have become more resilient and knowledgeable, setting the stage for continued progress in tsunami and earthquake preparedness in Pakistan’s coastal areas.
The project focused on the coastal districts of Malir, West/Keamari Karachi, and Gwadar. It aimed to reduce the risks associated with tsunamis and earthquakes, revising preparedness guidelines, and strengthening the disaster response capabilities of these vulnerable communities. It also emphasized gender equity in its approach to managing coastal hazards.
Mr. Wajahat Ahmed, Assistant Director (Civil) at PDMA Sindh, highlighted the significance of the project, noting, “This project represents a major achievement in our efforts to build disaster resilience. It showcases the power of collaboration and expertise, and we must use the lessons learned to further strengthen the resilience of our coastal communities.”
Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Mitsuhiro Wada, spoke about Japan’s extensive experience with natural disasters and its commitment to disaster risk management. He said, “Japan has a deep understanding of disaster risk management and preparedness, which is reflected in our Development Cooperation Charter. We are dedicated to applying this knowledge to support sustainable development and poverty eradication.”
UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative Dr. Samuel Rizk echoed this sentiment, stating, “While the project has ended, the empowered and resilient communities and institutions it has fostered will continue to have a lasting impact. Our partnership with Japan has been crucial in building a more resilient future for these coastal regions.”
The ceremony underscored the collaborative efforts that have fortified Pakistan’s coastal communities against future natural disasters, leaving a legacy of preparedness and resilience.
