ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Federal Minister of Energy Awais Leghari , highlighting the urgent issue of electricity theft. He expressed frustration over the current situation and revealed that the government is planning to introduce a prepaid electricity billing system, similar to how phone bills are paid.
Leghari emphasized that this change is crucial for tackling the rampant theft of electricity and improving overall efficiency. He reassured the public that efforts are underway to address all the ongoing problems within the power sector, which he acknowledged has significant shortcomings.
The minister also provided an update on discussions with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) regarding a relief package of Rs45 billion, a commitment made by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif two weeks ago. He anticipated that this would lead to a substantial reduction in electricity prices next year.
Leghari noted that the depreciation of the rupee has significantly increased capacity payments, and he announced plans to visit power companies in Balochistan and Sindh next week to further address these issues.
