ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Weeks after Nawaz Sharif, president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz promised a Rs14 per unit reduction in electricity bills for August and September for consumers in Punjab and Islamabad, the government is now preparing to impose an additional Rs46 billion in power costs on consumers.
This new charge, part of a quarterly adjustment, will cover various costs from April to June. Consumers will face a Rs22 billion charge for capacity payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), another Rs10 billion for the transmission and distribution of electricity, and an additional Rs14 billion for other expenses.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to review the IPPs’ application today.
