ISLAMABAD (PEN) : After being swept in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, Pakistan has experienced a significant drop in the ICC Test Championship standings. They’ve lost 24 critical points and now find themselves in 8th place, which has greatly diminished their hopes of reaching the championship final.
In contrast, Bangladesh’s surprising success has catapulted them to 4th place in the rankings. At the top, India leads the standings based on the average points per match won, with defending champions Australia holding the second spot. New Zealand is in third place, followed by England in fifth, South Africa in sixth, Sri Lanka in seventh, and the West Indies in ninth.
The championship final is set to take place at Lord’s between the top two teams in the rankings.
Pakistan’s performance has been disappointing, with only 2 wins out of 7 matches and 5 losses. Their current average stands at 19.05 points, with 16 points overall. Although they’re not completely out of contention, their path to the final stages is becoming increasingly challenging.
In the ICC Test Championship, teams earn 12 points for a win, 6 points for a tie, and 4 points for a draw. Pakistan has also faced deductions of 8 points due to slow over rates, with each slow over costing 1 point.
South Africa won the inaugural Test Championship, while India and Australia have each claimed the title twice. Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies have each won it once.
