ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Nawaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has voiced his dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the constitutional amendment process.
Returning to Lahore from his Jati Umra residence after a brief stay in Islamabad, the former Prime Minister expressed his concerns with his party over the amendment strategy. Sources close to Nawaz Sharif reveal that he was unhappy with the approach taken by Shehbaz Sharif and decided to distance himself from the process.
Despite being in Islamabad to attend the National Assembly session, Nawaz Sharif did not meet with President Zardari or JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, even though Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had made efforts to arrange such meetings.
Nawaz Sharif reportedly felt that the government should have consulted Fazlur Rehman before moving forward with the amendments.
Today, the National Assembly is set to debate and present a series of significant constitutional amendments. Among the proposed changes is an increase in the number of seats for Balochistan in the provincial assembly, raising them from 65 to 81 to ensure better representation for the province.
The amendments also include updates to Article 63, which addresses the disqualification of Parliament members, with new provisions concerning the voting behavior of members who defect from their parties.
These changes reflect ongoing efforts to address key issues in Pakistan’s Constitution and enhance representation and governance.
