ISLAMABAD (PEN) : New Zealand triumphed over India by 58 runs in a gripping group stage match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in Dubai.
The match began with an explosive opening partnership, and Sophie Devine’s remarkable unbeaten 57 helped New Zealand set a tournament-high total of 160, putting India in a tough position as they needed to chase down 161 to win.
From the outset, India’s pursuit faltered, with wickets tumbling at a troubling rate. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team found themselves bowled out well short of their target, leaving them in a precarious spot in Group A.
India’s batting lineup struggled to find their rhythm. Although five of the top six batters reached double figures, none could surpass 15 runs, highlighting their inability to build a solid innings.
Eden Carson made an early impact, dismissing both openers. She took a brilliant return catch to get rid of Shafali Verma for just 2 runs and had Smriti Mandhana caught at long-on for 12.
Captain Harmanpreet looked promising as she attempted to steady the ship but fell victim to a delivery from Rosemary Mair that trapped her in front, ending hopes of a comeback during the powerplay.
New Zealand’s bowlers swiftly dismantled India’s batting order, leaving little chance for a turnaround and effectively sealing the match well before it reached its conclusion.
Earlier in the day, after winning the toss, Sophie Devine chose to bat first in the evening match. Her decision quickly paid off as the White Ferns opened strong, amassing 55 runs in the first six overs, aided by some lackluster fielding from the Indian side.
