ISLAMABAD (PEN) : A key committee of the United Nations General Assembly has recently adopted four resolutions put forward by Pakistan, focused on advancing regional and global peace and security through disarmament. These resolutions reflect Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace, stability, and restraint in defense policies, particularly in regions where tensions remain high.
Three of these resolutions, presented to the UN’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, were overwhelmingly supported by the 193-member Assembly on Thursday. Despite the global challenges facing non-proliferation and disarmament efforts, the resolutions gained strong backing from UN member states. The resolutions will be up for final endorsement by the full General Assembly next month.
The resolutions cover key areas of regional disarmament, the control of conventional arms, and the implementation of Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) at both regional and subregional levels. The resolutions titled “Regional Disarmament” and “Confidence-Building Measures in the Regional and Sub-regional Context” were adopted by consensus, underlining broad international support for Pakistan’s approach to arms control.
Another resolution, on “Conventional Arms Control at the Regional and Sub-regional Level,” received significant approval, with 179 votes in favor. India was the only country to vote against it, while Israel abstained. This broad support highlights the global recognition of Pakistan’s advocacy for balanced defense capabilities and restraint in regions where states share common security concerns. The resolution stresses the importance of maintaining a balance in military capabilities to enhance peace and prevent escalation.
Diplomats at the UN have expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s long-standing efforts to promote disarmament, regional stability, and confidence-building initiatives. These resolutions are seen as reinforcing the complementary nature of regional and global arms control efforts, working together to promote international peace and security.
Another important resolution put forward by Pakistan, titled “Conclusion of Effective International Arrangements to Assure Non-Nuclear Weapon States Against the Use or Threat of Use of Nuclear Weapons,” also gained traction. It was adopted with 117 votes in favor, none against, and 64 abstentions. This resolution calls for legally binding security assurances to non-nuclear-weapon states, ensuring they are protected from the threat of nuclear aggression. The resolution reflects a growing global concern about nuclear security and the importance of building trust between nuclear and non-nuclear states.
In sum, Pakistan’s initiatives in the UN have once again underscored the importance of disarmament as a pathway to peace. The overwhelming support for these resolutions is a testament to the international community’s recognition of the need for collective action in reducing the threat of arms proliferation, fostering confidence, and building a more secure world for future generations.
