ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, along with his daughter and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, arrived in London from Geneva.
Speaking to the media outside the Avenfield House in Mayfair, Nawaz Sharif highlighted several key political and economic issues, including his hopes for improved relations between Pakistan, the United States, and India.
Nawaz Sharif expressed optimism about the future of Pakistan’s diplomatic ties with the US, particularly following Donald Trump’s re-election as President. “Relations between Pakistan and the US have been good, and they should continue to improve. It is also crucial that we maintain strong ties with our neighbors,” he said.
On the topic of cricket diplomacy, Nawaz Sharif reiterated his call for India to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, a gesture he believes could enhance bilateral relations. “Cricket is a powerful tool for diplomacy, and India’s visit to Pakistan would contribute to better ties between the two countries,” he stated. “That time will come when the cricket team will visit too.”
Nawaz Sharif also lauded the efforts of his brother, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, for stabilizing Pakistan’s economy. “Shehbaz Sharif has done commendable work in bringing economic stability to the country. Under his leadership, the economic indicators are improving, with reserves rising, the stock exchange on the rise, and interest rates and inflation coming down,” he said.
Nawaz also acknowledged the role of Maryam Nawaz, noting that she had played a key role in reducing flour prices and initiating welfare projects in Punjab.
When questioned about the ongoing smog issue in Punjab, Nawaz Sharif directed his criticism at the PTI government, particularly former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ‘Billion Tree Tsunami’ initiative. “Where are the billion trees? Where are the 50 lakh jobs? Where are the dams?” Nawaz said, accusing PTI of failing to deliver on its promises. “The PTI left behind a culture of hooliganism, promoting misbehavior both in power and in opposition. This culture is extremely unfortunate.”
In response to a journalist’s query about Imran Khan’s legal troubles, Nawaz Sharif remained non-committal, saying, “Ask those who believe he will remain in jail as long as he wants.”
Maryam Nawaz, who was also present at the media briefing, echoed her father’s sentiments, stressing the need for patience in tackling the smog issue. “The issue of smog has been persistent for years, and we cannot resolve it overnight. However, we are taking every possible step to address it,” she explained, highlighting that the previous government had failed to take any concrete measures.
Maryam Nawaz also touched upon the ongoing health situation, confirming that she was in good health following her recent check-up in Geneva. Additionally, she hinted at plans to establish a Punjab-based airline as part of the provincial government’s efforts to bolster infrastructure and create jobs.
As for the economy, Maryam Nawaz expressed optimism, noting that Pakistan is receiving positive news following the challenges faced by the previous government. “Under Nawaz Sharif’s leadership, Pakistan laid the foundation for its economic recovery. Now, under Shehbaz Sharif and my government, we are seeing tangible progress, and I am confident that we will overcome our difficulties soon.”
