ISLAMABAD (PEN) : On Wednesday, China strongly criticized remarks made by the Philippine defense minister, calling them “baseless accusations” and accusing them of “maliciously attacking” China’s ruling Communist Party.
Gilberto Teodoro, the Philippine defense minister, stated on Tuesday that the Philippines has every right to allow the deployment of a U.S. missile system, despite ongoing opposition from China, as reported by Philippine media.
In response, China’s embassy in Manila issued a statement condemning Teodoro’s comments as being “filled with ideological bias, factional confrontation, and a Cold War mentality.” The embassy further called on the Philippines to swiftly reconsider the deployment of the U.S. Typhon missile system.
The Philippine embassy in Beijing has not yet responded to a request for comment from Reuters. Teodoro clarified that his remarks were a direct response to opposition expressed by a Chinese government spokesperson regarding the missile deployment, according to reports from Philippine media.
